What a Clover actually costs you every month.

Most people asking about Clover fees do not want a lecture on interchange. They want to know what lands on the statement in thirty days. So this page is arithmetic: the four buckets a Clover bill is built from, what goes in each one, and how to work out your own number instead of trusting a quote.

Disclosure first

I sell Clover. Here is the whole bill anyway.

I resell Clover, Square, Valor, PAX and Dejavoo. I make money when you buy hardware and when you process on a program I set up, so read this the way you would read anything written by someone with a stake in the answer. I would rather you knew your real number than took mine on trust, because the merchants who understand their own statement are the ones who stay.

A Clover bill has four buckets, and almost every unpleasant surprise is a bucket somebody forgot to mention. One: the hardware. Two: the software plan, charged monthly and per device. Three: the processing, a percentage plus a per-item fee on every sale. Four: everything else — service and compliance line items outside the headline rate, plus any apps from Clover's app market. Miss a bucket and your estimate is wrong by more than the gap between two processors.

If what you want is the structural explanation — why the rate is bundled, why the same machine is priced differently at two shops on the same street — that page is already written: Clover fees explained. Read that for the why. Stay here for the how much.

The plans

Clover's published 2026 software plans, charged per device

PlanPublished monthly priceBuilt for
EssentialsAbout $14.95/monthA business that mostly needs to take payments — a service counter, a trade, a simple shop.
RegisterAbout $49.95/monthRetail that needs inventory, item-level reporting and order management.
Counter Service RestaurantAbout $54.95/monthQuick-serve: a cafe, a takeout counter, a bar that rings and closes in one go.
Table Service RestaurantAbout $84.95/monthFull-service dining with table management and open checks.

These are Clover's published 2026 US plan prices and each is charged per device, so two devices generally means two subscriptions. Processor and platform pricing changes; confirm the current figures with the provider before budgeting on them.

Bucket two

The software plan, and the word that catches people.

Clover is not a flat-rate app with the software thrown in. It charges a monthly subscription, and the plan is chosen against how you sell. The published 2026 plans run from about $14.95/month for Essentials, through about $49.95/month for Register with inventory and item-level reporting, about $54.95/month for Counter Service Restaurant, up to about $84.95/month for Table Service Restaurant with table management. Clover can revise this, so confirm current plan pricing with the provider before you budget on it.

The word that catches people is per device. Two Stations is generally two subscriptions. A Station plus a Flex for tableside is generally two. Four handhelds is four. None of that is hidden, but it is routinely left out of the mental math when somebody compares a quote against the flat monthly they pay today. Count your devices and multiply.

Bucket three

The processing, and the only number worth comparing.

Clover's published 2026 card-present rates run roughly 2.3% to 2.6% plus 10 cents, varying by plan and industry — restaurant plans nearer the low end, retail starter plans nearer the high end. Keyed and card-not-present sales are about 3.5% plus 10 cents. Those are bundled rates, with the card networks' interchange already folded in alongside the processor's markup, which is why two sellers can both say 2.6% and cost you different amounts. Processor pricing changes; treat any quoted rate as a snapshot and confirm the current one with your provider.

Here is the arithmetic that actually answers what will I pay a month. Take last month's card volume and transaction count. Multiply volume by your card-present rate, add ten cents per transaction, add the software plan for every device, then add every fixed monthly line item. That total divided by your card volume is your effective rate. A seller quoting a low percentage with four monthly line items under it can easily cost more than one quoting a higher percentage with none.

Bucket four

The line items people get surprised by.

The advertised percentage is rarely the whole bill. Depending on who sold you the system, a statement can also carry a monthly statement or service fee, a PCI-compliance fee, and a platform or gateway fee. Add apps from Clover's app market — loyalty, scheduling, inventory, ordering — and each carries its own subscription that appears separately. None of it is concealed; it is in the paperwork. It is simply not in the number the salesperson said out loud.

Hardware is its own decision, and depending on the seller you may own the device outright or pay for it over time. I am not going to characterize any provider's terms here, because terms belong to the seller and they change. The boring advice holds: read the agreement in front of you, find every recurring charge, and make the person selling it point at each one in the document rather than describe it.

Last piece: what you can change without replacing anything. A Clover you like is a Clover worth keeping, and what usually needs fixing is the rate and structure behind it — including whether a compliant zero-cost or dual-pricing program fits, which is legal in all 50 states when set up and disclosed correctly and can often run on hardware you already own. The mechanics are on the processing page. Work out your real monthly number first.

On your statement

What the terminal does not fix

You just spent an hour on the smaller number.

Say the exercise above saves you a point of margin. Good — that is real money and it recurs. Now put it next to the calls that rang out last week while you were serving somebody, and the customer who searched, found a site that did not say whether you were open, and quietly went elsewhere. Neither of those appears on any statement, which is precisely why they run for years unfixed. The cheapest place to start is the phone: every missed call gets a text back within seconds, at $99/mo.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much are Clover's monthly fees?

The software plan is the predictable part. Clover's published 2026 plans run from about $14.95/month for Essentials to about $49.95/month for Register, about $54.95/month for Counter Service Restaurant and about $84.95/month for Table Service Restaurant, charged per device. On top sit the processing fees on each sale and whatever service, compliance, gateway or app-market items your seller adds. Pricing can be revised, so confirm current figures with the provider.

Do I pay the software plan for every Clover device?

Generally yes — the subscription is per device, not per business. A Station plus a Flex for tableside is normally two subscriptions, and four handhelds for four servers is normally four. This is the most common gap between what an owner expected and what arrived, so count the devices before you compare any quote against what you pay now.

What will my Clover actually cost me per month?

Do the arithmetic on your own numbers. Take last month's card volume and transaction count, multiply the volume by your card-present rate, add the per-item cents times the transaction count, add the software plan for each device, then add every fixed line item. Divide that total by your card volume and you have your effective rate — the only number that compares two offers honestly.

Are there Clover fees that are not in the advertised rate?

There can be, depending on who sold you the system. Statement or service fees, PCI-compliance fees and platform or gateway fees all sit outside the headline percentage, and apps added from Clover's app market carry their own subscriptions. It is disclosed in the paperwork, but easy to miss when you compare two sellers on the rate alone. Ask the seller to point at each recurring charge.

Can I lower my Clover fees without replacing the hardware?

Usually, and that is normally the right order. The device is rarely the problem; the rate and structure behind it are. Start by calculating your effective rate from a real statement. From there the levers are a structure that suits your volume, or a compliant zero-cost or dual-pricing program — legal in all 50 states when set up and disclosed correctly, and often able to run on the Clover you already own. Keep the machine, fix the deal.

Is Clover cheaper than Square per month?

It depends on your volume and device count, and anyone answering in the abstract is guessing. Square's published 2026 entry-plan rate is 2.6% plus 15 cents card-present, with paid plans at about $49/month and about $149/month buying lower in-store rates. Clover's published card-present range is roughly 2.3% to 2.6% plus 10 cents, with a plan per device. Put your own volume and device count into both, and verify current numbers on each provider's own pricing page.

Is there a contract?

Not on this. Growth, marketing and website services — including the website care plan — are month-to-month with no long-term commitment, and you can prepay annually for up to two months free. Payment processing is a separate thing: it is a merchant account and it has its own terms, which I go over with you personally on the free review so everything is clear before you decide.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any month. There is no cancellation fee and no notice period to argue about on the month-to-month services — I would rather earn the next month than hold you to a term you regret. If you cancel a website plan the domain is yours, registered in your name, and you can take the site elsewhere.
